The following is an expression of the fundamental ideas of AAS. First of all, light at particular, distinct wavelengths can be absorbed by any atom or ion. Only the copper (Cu) atoms or ions in a sample combining copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni), for example, will absorb light with the characteristic wavelength of Cu.
